The Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts
History of the Sanderson Centre
The home of Broadway Musicals, concerts, comedy and community events the Sanderson Centre has become the heart of Brantford\’s Arts and Culture Centre.
The Sanderson Centre originally opened in 1919 as the Temple Theatre intended for silent movies and vaudeville shows. With the growing popularity of movies, the theatre was later bought by Famous Players in 1929 to be used for feature films, and was renamed the Capitol Theatre.
In 1986 the theatre underwent another change when the City of Brantford bought the theatre in an effort to preserve Brantford\’s heritage, and once again make it a cultural centre for the community. After $6,000,000.00 in renovations and restorations the theatre was officially reopened in September 1990 as the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts, borrowing it\’s name from the local Sanderson Family, known for their generous support of local causes.
